Domtar Does It Right
Emissions upgrade on a rebuild
Domatar Woodland Mill
Baileyville, ME

The third largest producer of uncoated freesheet paper in North America, Domtar is also a leading manufacturer of business paper, commercial printing and publication papers, as well as technical and specialty papers. Domtar manages 22 million acres of forestland in Canada and the United States and produces lumber and other wood products.
Woodland goes the extra mile.
One of several Domtar mills, Woodland is located in Baileyville, Maine, and is well known for its Northern hardwood pulp, Pulp Specialty and fine papers. “We’re proud of our products,” says General Manager Debby Feck, adding, “and especially proud of our environmental record.” Responsible thinking is not an “On-again, off-again” occurrence at Woodland – it happens as a matter of fact, across the board; whether it’s considering a new take on the boiler system or repairing the dozer that pushes woodchips into the reclaimer, the same strict parameters are applied.

With 55,000 hours on its first, Domtar’s older D8 has begun its second life for the company’s Woodland Mill in Baileyville, Maine.

| “The certified rebuild made a lot of sense to us! It gave us back a machine we really liked, now with increased horsepower, greater fuel efficiency and less emissions.” Jeff Robinson, chip-handling supervisor. |
|
If one takes into account the mill’s output and performance – their annual paper production capacity is 125,000 tons; annual pulp production capacity is 385,000 tons and annual cutsize production capacity, 44,000 tons – their record is even more impressive. It requires top-to-bottom dedication to maintain quality and consistency, plus, an unwavering commitment to minimizing their environmental footprint.
Feck explains that their achievements in that area include receiving the State of Maine Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention, the State of Maine Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner's Award for improving water quality in the St. Croix River and the Corporate Environmental Excellence Award for Pollution Prevention.

Across the board.
At the Woodland mill, greening happens at all stages. The boiler system, a $78 million dollar investment, is described by mill operations manager Jeff Robinson, as almost self-sufficient, “It takes process byproducts, recovers steam and creates energy,” states Environmental and Safety Manager Scott Beale.
Another example mentioned by Robinson was the rebuilding of the CAT dozer, “This was one of two CAT D8 dozers that are used for pushing woodchips into the reclaimer and it had caught on fire and completely burnt out.” Since they were very pleased with the machine’s versatility, ease of operation and power, they didn’t want to trade it and decided instead to have it rebuilt.

| “Certified Rebuilds are the right answer for when there is a good fit between job and machine” explains Peter Cote, Milton CAT parts and service sales representative. |
|
|
| “Deciding to move forward with an emissions upgrade was in keeping with Domtar’s top to bottom, company-wide goal of reducing our impact on the environment. It was a win-win.” says Scott Beal, environmental and safety manager. |
|
“Certified rebuild is a unique option that we offer at Milton CAT,” says Parts and Sales Representative Peter Cote. Cote says that customers often choose to have machines rebuilt when the fit between the job and the machine was exactly right and the performance was particularly appreciated.
What exactly is a Certified Powertrain Rebuild?
Available at certain CAT dealers who have demonstrated their capabilities, have invested in the equipment and training and are able to maintain rigorous standards, the CAT Certified Rebuild Program takes advantage of the fact that CAT equipment is built to have a second life. The program includes a thorough evaluation, comprising more than 350 tests and inspections, and the replacement of up to 7,000 parts. The end result? According to Cote, a like-new machine, with all the latest technology.

The CAT Certified Powertrain Program incorporates the latest engineering updates into the powertrain and covers the engine, transmission, torque converter, final drives, radiator and axles in most machines.
According to Cote, another option is a CAT Emissions Retrofit solution, which extends the life of older machines, minimizes downtime and provides immediate emissions reductions. “The emissions upgrade was only an additional $5,000, and mill management decided to get it done, too,” explains Cote. As a result, the machine went from non-compliant to Tier-One compliant, with a platform for more future enhancements. The best part? “There was an outstanding performance gain, 25% increase in horsepower!” laughs Robinson, telling us that now all the operators want to drive it.
Operator Arthur Beach confirms, “We get a lot more power, and a lot less noise!” According to Beach, who really appreciated the old dozer’s maneuverability, with the rebuilt transmission the dozer lets him push more chips, never overheats and saves a lot of time. A good investment, as summarized by Robinson – “It is going to pay us back for the next 30 years!”
